Prescription Drug Program

Part D Plans

Medicare Part D plans provide prescription drug coverage. This coverage is not included in your basic Medicare coverage, and offered through private insurance companies or other Medicare approved companies. Every plan includes a formulary (a given list of medicinal prescriptions that are covered under a specific insurance plan). All insurance companies have a network of pharmacies that accept their plan.

Eligibility

Part D plans are available to those who are eligible for Medicare. This includes people who are 65 years or older, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. It may also cover people under 65 with certain health conditions or disabilities. These disabilities include End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Enrollment Periods

You are eligible to enroll in Medicare Part D during the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is the period of enrollment that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, and ends 3 months after your birthday. Plans will begin on the first day of the month of a person’s 65th birthday. You may also enroll during Annual Enrollment (AEP), which occurs every year from October 15th to December 7th.

It is important to remember that there is a penalty charge added onto Medicare premiums for those who do not enroll in Part D during their Initial Enrollment Period around their 65th birthday. It is best to be prepared in advance and avoid these penalties!
